The Stations of the Cross were prayed by early Christians as early as the three hundredth year of our Lord.

Catechism of the Catholic Church Paragraph 618:

"The cross is the unique sacrifice of Christ, the "one mediator between God and men". But because in his incarnate divine person he has in some way united himself to every man, "the possibility of being made partners, in a way known to God, in the paschal mystery" is offered to all men. He calls his disciples to "take up [their] cross and follow [him]", for "Christ also suffered for [us], leaving [us] an example so that [we] should follow in his steps." In fact Jesus desires to associate with his redeeming sacrifice those who were to be its first beneficiaries. This is achieved supremely in the case of his mother, who was associated more intimately than any other person in the mystery of his redemptive suffering.

Apart from the cross there is no other ladder by which we may get to heaven."

Saint John of the Cross:

"All bear their crosses although these crosses be different. If a person wants to gain freedom of spirit and not always be troubled, let them begin by not being frightened by the cross. Then they will see how the Lord helps him carry it."

Catechism of the Catholic Church Paragraph 640:

"The Word became flesh to make us "partakers of the divine nature": "For this is why the Word became man, and the Son of God became the Son of man: so that man, by entering into communion with the Word and thus receiving divine sonship, might become a son of God."7"For the Son of God became man so that we might become God." "The only-begotten Son of God, wanting to make us sharers in his divinity, assumed our nature, so that he, made man, might make men gods.""

Blessed Elizabeth of the Trinity:

”The soul that is stripped of self and clothed in Jesus Christ has nothing to fear from the exterior world. Therefore I renounce myself each day so that Christ may increase in me.”

Saint Paul of the Cross:

"The cross is the way to paradise but only when it is born willingly"
